In defence of the unity of COSATU

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Western Cape has urged
COSATU to fight divisions and not allow outside forces to split it.

The SACP said yesterday it had a duty to protect and defend the trade union
federation. Its comments came in the wake of a similar call by SACP national
deputy chairperson and Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi who urged the
labour movement to get its house in order and unite.

The party in the province made the call for unity in its declaration on the
back of its provincial conference in Cape Town.

It said the time had come for COSATU to fight divisions in its ranks.

"We also note the renewed imperialist capitalist offensive to weaken the
progressive trade union to advance their class interests of accumulation.
The trade union movement is confronted by serious challenges resulting from
the capitalist restructuring of the workplace and business unionism, which
manifests its narrow ugly head particularly during congresses," it said.

"(The SACP) resolved to defend the unity of COSATU, acting as a vanguard
party of the working class to consolidate and strengthen the left axis," it
said.

The tripartite alliance was important in leading the country it said.

It said each partner in the tripartite alliance was independent of one
another.

But it was important that alliance partners work together to build a strong
national developmental agenda.

COSATU has over the last few months been battling to contain factional
divisions threatening to split the trade union movement.

Some COSATU affiliates, led by metalworkers union NUMSA, are accusing the
federation's president Sdumo Dlamini of trying to oust the general secretary
Zwelinzima Vavi.

Dlamini is mulling over a proposal by Vavi-aligned unions to call a special
conference.

Vavi was suspended in August after he admitted to having had a sexual
relationship with a junior colleague at COSATU offices.

NUMSA has also gone to the South Gauteng High Court to overturn the
suspension of Vavi.

At the weekend Nxesi made a similar call at the SACP's provincial conference
in Mpumalanga that COSATU must strive for unity.

He said COSATU must get its house in order.

The Western Cape SACP reiterated its position to back the ANC to recapture
the province from the DA.
