FAWU Press Statement, 1 October 2013 Tariff Hike by Trade and Industry Minister Davies Protects the SA Poultry Sector The Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) welcomes the announcement made by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Rob Davies, on the increased tariff rates in protection of the South African poultry industry against foreign dumping of chicken products from Brazil and other jurisdictions. We particularly welcome the balanced approach to the need for cheaper chicken products in the country for affordability of this protein sources yet securing the 100 000 jobs contained in this sector and its value-chain. FAWU feels vindicated in its campaign for protection of manufacturing jobs, such as those located in the chicken processing stage of the value-chain, as well as the need to defend the food security imperative that goes with defending this sector. We will call on the chicken producers and processors not to abuse, by a way of excessive pricing and by a way of sitting on their 'uncompetitive' laurels, the new dispensation but work hard on investing in production processes, such as modernizing machinery and up-skilling workers' skills instead of deploying job-replacing machinery. We call on the poultry producers and processors to set aside funds in pursuit to the training of young people to join the sector by investing in their skills and by promoting enterprise development. Meanwhile, FAWU will not hesitate to call on government involvement should the tariff intervention above create negative effects detrimental to society than positive outcomes that will beneficial to our country.
