President Zuma to Launch Bridge City Station and the Rail Link Project

President Jacob Zuma will on Saturday, 19 October 2013, launch the Bridge
City Station and Rail Link Project at KwaMashu, in Durban.

The launch forms part of government's infrastructure roll out and is also
part of highlighting transport matters during October as Transport Month.

President Zuma unveiled the National Infrastructure Plan in the 2012 State
of the Nation Address, whose key feature is the coordination of
infrastructure build centrally in the Presidency, through the Presidential
Infrastructure Coordinating Commission, (PICC), chaired by the President.

This major infrastructure Project is located in the INK (Inanda, Ntuzuma and
KwaMashu) area in eThekwini Municipality. Government has invested over R1
billion in the project, built by the Department of Transport through the
Passenger Rail Association of South Africa (PRASA).

The Bridge City Station and Rail Link Project is a significant public
transport intervention that provides a new 3.2 kilometre rail link with a
terminal station underneath the Bridge City Mall, as well as a fully
integrated road-based transport interchange for convenient connectivity to
the public transport system. The new rail link provides for an extra 8 000
passengers per day accessing the rail network and the project has already
made a significant and substantive contribution to local job creation,
peaking at 27 500 jobs during the construction period.

PRASA has additionally ensured that other substantive benefits have been
made to the surrounding communities of Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu,
including 10 tertiary education level bursaries for deserving students as
well as significant skills transfer initiatives for the local communities.

President Zuma will be accompanied by the Minister of Transport Ms Dipuo
Peters and KwaZulu-Natal Premier Mr Senzo Mchunu.
