Sidney Horowitz' Booklet
Sidney Horowitz is the CU's best friend in New York, now and for some years past. Last month, Comrade Sidney wrote the message below, and sent us the booklet that he mentions there. You will see that he wishes for feedback, and discussion, of his work. I asked if I could use Sidney's eight short chapters for sending out separately, on all channels, at a rate of one per week, in between the end of our last course in 2013, and the beginning of the first course in 2014. Sidney kindly agreed, and he also agreed to my attaching appropriate texts from the classics. I wanted to do that because it is the CU practice to do so. The quality of Cde Sidney's input is really high, in my estimation. It's a pleasure and an honour to be able to publish this material in SA as part of our CU activities. Note that he includes some questions to prompt and to encourage discussion, at the end of each piece. So.. Asikhulume! The first Chapter of Sidney Horowitz' Booklet will be sent out tomorrow. Com Sidney's letter of 4 October 2013: I am attaching a booklet I wrote for classes I gave in China in 2012. Here is the background: I was asked to provide readings of 4 pages each for a class of Chinese undergraduate students who had studied English as a second language. The university told me that that was a heavy reading load (!) for their Chinese students. I had 30 students. We met two times/week. Each class was 2 hours. What actually happened is that most of the students were foreign students studying in China - about 6 or 8 from Africa, and the others scattered around (Asia, Latin America, and one from the USA). Some were the sons and daughters of foreign businessmen/women who had operations in China and came to China to study. ALMOST ALL THE STUDENTS SPOKE ENGLISH WELL. The reading load was light, especially for the non-Chinese! Yet, it took the 2 hours of lecture/ discussion/ Socratic method to get the concepts firmly understood and rooted. One of my challenges was how to put a lot of ideas in 4 pages, and yet have them be understandable. I had a good time writing it, and a good time teaching it. The students liked the class a lot! They said the ideas and approach were new to them. At the end of the course, I asked them for suggestions on how to improve it, and I got some good ideas. I have not distributed the booklet anywhere else. I just put the name "Sidney Horowitz" on it. I'm not looking for fame...rather, I would like to keep working in my field! If you think any parts of it would be useful for CU readers, I would be happy to have you use it, post it for comments, etc. etc. I am thinking about some way to use it, or an amended version, in the USA. I have been invited to give some guest lectures to some college students - using the booklet - but I am not sure what I'll do.
