19th Anniversary Commemoration of the passing away of Joe Slovo

The SACP will on Monday, 6 January 2014, be commemorating the 19th
anniversary of the passing away of comrade Joe Slovo. At the time of his
death, Slovo was SACP National Chairperson and Politburo Member, as well as
Member of the African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee
and National Working Committee. A communist cadre who believed the struggle
for complete freedom through the national democratic revolution and
socialism took place in multiple fronts and had to be waged in all strategic
centres of power, including the state, Slovo was also the Minister of
Housing in the Government of National Unity.

As a worker, Slovo joined the National Union of Distributive Workers and
became one of its Shop Stewards, leading strikes. He joined the Communist
Party in 1942, and was also a founder member of the Congress of Democrats,
which he represented in the National Consultative Committee of the Congress
Alliance that drew up the Freedom Charter. He was one of our finest
revolutionaries who were arrested and detained during the notorious Treason
Trial of 1956, and charges against him were dropped in 1958. A revolutionary
to the core, Slovo became one of the leaders of the people's liberation
army, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), in 1961.

Slovo played one of the crucial roles in the negotiations that contributed
to the birth of democracy in South Africa after the unbanning of political
parties, release of political prisoners and return from exile in 1990.
