Violent Protests

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) is extremely saddened by
the deaths of protesting members of the public in Mothotlung and Roodepoort.

The union also finds it unfortunate that the police had to resort to extreme
measures in order to bring violent protests under control. We believe that
it remains hard for members of the Police to have to use exerted force as
legislated, in order to restore order where protesters have rendered
communities lawless.

The officers are left with no choice but to deliver on their mandate of
ensuring the safety of all South Africans.

We have also noted the action taken against some of the officers who were
deployed to the protests, and hope the South African Police Service will act
procedurally in dealing with these cases.

POPCRU vows to challenge the dismissal of its members who aren't guilty of
any wrong-doing.
