Cop killings are barbaric - MEC

SAPA, News24, Johannesburg, 1 February 2014

The killing of two KwaDukuza policemen on Saturday was a callous, heartless
and barbaric deed, said KwaZulu-Natal Safety MEC Willies Mchunu.

He said it was a sad day for South Africa as the murders happened on the
same day that another KZN policeman was being buried after being shot dead
during a cash-in-transit robbery in Richmond on Monday.

"Police officers are the shield of defence for the defenceless communities
and responsible for the safety of the nation. It is totally abhorrent now
that they have become the victims of criminals bent on fulfilling their
nefarious deeds," he said in a statement.

"This satanic deed of targeting and killing police officers, who are the
first and the last line of defence for the defenceless communities against
heartless criminals, should be strongly condemned."

The two murdered policemen were part of a four member team from KwaDukuza SA
Police Service who had stopped to check a suspicious vehicle which was
standing on the side of the R74.

They were seated in the front of the police vehicle when three men suddenly
emerged from the bush and shot them in the head, said police spokesperson
Jay Naicker.

One of the attackers got into the police vehicle and wrestled with the third
officer for his firearm.

The other officer, seated at the back of the vehicle, then pulled his
firearm and shot at the men who fled back into the bushes, said Naicker.

No arrests had been made.

Mchunu sent his condolences to the policemen's families.
