POPCRU's Reaction to the State of the Nation Address

South African President, Jacob Zuma delivered his administration's last
State of the Nation Address last night, focusing on several subjects which
reflect where we are as a nation and where we are headed. The Police and
Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) welcomes the address in its entirety and
prides itself with how far we have come as a country in the past 20 years of
democracy. We appreciate that great strides have been made in the fight
against crime, with the overall crime decreasing by 21% over the past 12
years. Although the crime statistics have dropped, we still believe there
are a number of challenges in the system which President Zuma's
administration should address.

POPCRU is also happy with the President's commitment to reopening Family
Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units as well as Sexual
Offences Courts. Our members in the Police Service have stated for years
that the listed units and court are very effective in the fight against
child and woman abuse and would go a long way in assisting in the battle
which law enforcers have waged against criminals.

This effort and many others by the current administration is the reason
behind our faith in the President's sentiments that indeed South Africa has
a good story to tell. POPCRU also lauds the President's sentiments in
condemning anarchy and the loss of human life in the hands of the police.
While we, as an organisation will continue to work hard to ensure that our
members carry out their duties in the most professional of manners, a lot
more happens in the field as they work to bring peace to conflicted
communities.

Last night our leaders in the Western Cape were alerted that our member, a
female police officer was killed on duty as she and a partner were
responding to an armed robbery case in Kraaifontein. She is now one of the
many officers who get gunned down by criminals while trying to protect the
citizens of this country. President Jacob Zuma said in his State of the
Nation Address that the police are protectors and are the buffer between a
democratic society and anarchy. We share these sentiments and hope that in
light of this, the public will come forward with information and help catch
those who kill members of the South African Police Service.
