Media Statement, 18 February 2014 The Democratic Alliance's Pillaging of Public Resources to the Tune of R10,3 Billion NEHAWU is vindicated by the findings of the Auditor General (AG) on the extensive pillaging of the public resources by the DA led provincial government to the tune of R10,3 billion, through the use of consultants. The AG's report shows that the DA-led administration spent approximately R10.3 billion on consultants over three years. Our union has persistently argued against the use of consultants by the Zille administration, and pointed out that this left many public service workers redundant and frustrated. This is a confirmation of our long held view, that the DA is a hypocritical party that uses the poor during elections and abandon them afterwards. They systematically divert public funds away from the needs of the poor and redirect them to their capitalist masters when the elections are over. The Zille administration has adopted an anti-worker and anti-state approach in the Western Cape and the results on service delivery are there for all to see. The Western Cape has been on a downward spiral regarding service delivery since the DA took over the administration of the province. Resources meant for the poor have been handed over to well-connected consultants. While the poor in the province find themselves mired in a cycle of poverty, the Zille administration is spending the resources on vanity projects and image improvement endeavours. The amount of money spent on consultants is staggering. Therefore we demand a thorough investigation of possible collusion between the DA and these consultants. What is alarming is that this comes immediately after the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela discovered that the communications contract between the DA-led Western Cape government and the advertising agency TBWA Hunt Lascaris was illegal. She was explicit in her conclusions that this amounted to "improper conduct and maladministration" and the contract needed to be cancelled. Ms Helen Zille and her administration have neglected all proper governance and financial management principles, when dealing with these consultants. We support the call by the SACP for an investigation to find out whether the public coffers are not being looted in order to pacify the DA funders. We find it both, abominable and laughable, that the big "Constitutionalists" of the DA are the first ones to attack the chapter 9 institutions when they expose their hypocrisy and tenderpreneurship. The Auditor General, the Public Protector and other democratic institutions are only useful and effective, according to the DA, when they focus on the ANC but are attacked and denigrated when they expose the corruption and double standards of the DA and its leadership The scourge of corruption is the biggest impediment to service delivery, and has produced serious disillusionment and resentment from the poor. The private sector is the source of problems that currently engulf the public service because they use all immoral tactics to poison and corrupt the public service. The DA has been exposed time again that it is in bed with the private sector and they are intent on weakening and looting the public service. Corruption has never done this country any good, and it needs to be fought against, not put under new management for different groups.
