Media Statement, 20 March 2014 SADTU National Executive Committee in the Eastern Cape SADTU National General Council held in October 2013 took a decision that the National Executive Committee must develop an approach on the developments in Eastern Cape Province. In pursuance of this decision the National Executive Committee developed a programme which included amongst others holding meetings with the Provincial Working Committee, Provincial Executive Committee, Regional Executive Committees and Teacher Forum. The meetings with the Provincial Working Committee and Provincial Executive Committee were scheduled for the 11th and 12th March 2014 respectively but those meetings could not materialise. The NEC on the 12th March resolved to proceed with meeting the Regional Executive Committees and Teacher Forum. The first meeting of the NEC with South Eastern Regional Executive Committee and Teacher Forum was held yesterday in Butterworth. The meeting was highly successful and dealt with organisational issues ranging from developments in COSATU and SADTU, salary negotiations for 2015 to 2016. The current facilitation process on the 0,5% disparity where the meeting expressed a concern on the slow pace of facilitation, progress in mobilizing support for the African National Congress in the coming general elections, the outstanding OSD matters that have been frustrated by the Director General of Department of Basic Education since 2009. The meeting also clarified a number of lies and propaganda that were being peddled in the media. The NEC assured all members of SADTU that no one could withhold subscriptions to the Union unless such a member had decided to resign. The NEC further committed the Union to rebuild its structures to service members, deal with Grade R matters and the problematic Government Employee Medical Scheme (GEMS). The members mandated the NEC to be aggressive in campaigning for the ANC in order to move South Africa forward, implementing the manifesto on education and reject the competency test for markers. The meeting welcomed and supported the NGC resolution on both suspended President Cde Thobile Ntola and the General Secretary of COSATU Cde Zwelizima Vavi. A clear call is that the constitution should be observed at all the times and that the two leaders should subject themselves to the internal disciplinary processes of our organisations. No one is above the constitution. Members confirmed their love and faith in SADTU as the only beacon of hope, tried and tested to improve the conditions of teachers and Education Workers in the country. Members will not resign from the union in support of individuals. They joined the union individually, voluntarily and will not be coerced to resign from SADTU.
