Media Statement, 26 March 2014 NEHAWU will march to the Western Cape Premier's office to demand jobs for the unemployed NEHAWU in the Western Cape, together with our federation COSATU and alliance partners the SACP and ANC will be marching to the Western Cape Premier's office on 27 March 2014, with thousands of unemployed people from around the province, to demand that they be employed immediately. We have noted that the DA has made bold claims that it is going to create: . Six million permanent jobs . One million internships . Seven million EPWP opportunities As the union that organises in the public service, which includes the provincial government of the Western Cape, we challenge the DA's employment creation record in the province. Our experience as public servants is that, contrary to their promises, the DA is incapable of creating jobs. The Western Cape Province has shed thousands of jobs according to Statistics SA. NEHAWU has been convening a series of mass meetings in various towns, farms and townships in order to mobilise people to come out and expose the scandalous falsehoods being perpetuated by the DA in the Province. The only jobs that have been created by the DA are those of those thousands of black people (mostly foreigners), who are hired to attend DA rallies and marches across the country. The programme for the march will unfold in the following stages: 11h00 Marchers will gather at Kaisersgracht Street in District 6 12h00 March to the Provincial Legislature in Wale Street 12h30 Leadership will hand over the memorandum to the Premier and DA leaders We expect thousands of unemployed people from around the province to report for duty at the provincial government departments. We expect them to be the first batch of workers to be employed by the administration in line with the DA's promise to create 6 million "real" jobs, 1 million internships and 7 million public works job opportunities. We are prepared to hold the DA accountable and ensure that it honours its promises. This march will also be used to highlight the neo-apartheid practices of the DA-led administration which includes blatant racism and victimisation of black professionals in the municipalities and provincial administration. The administration has been flouting laws such as the Employment Equity Act and Skills Development Act; they have entrenched apartheid special patterns, persecuted farm workers. They have de-industrialised the economy, promoted labour brokers and loan sharks. They rolled out the BRT system only to wealthy suburbs. We will also be appealing to the national government of the ANC to intervene and ensure that the Western Cape does not evolve into an imperial outpost and an ally of countries such as Israel with their apartheid practices.
