6 May 2014 ANC Statement on Elections The African National Congress calls on South Africans to go out in numbers today in the instance of special voters and tomorrow for all other voters. These elections mark a consolidation of democracy after 20 years of uninterrupted and robust transition that has been characterized by tolerance, plurality of views and separation of state powers. This is an indication of the resolve by our people to take our transition forward with an expectation that our people from all walks of life will benefit from sustained democracy. The ANC is hopeful that the majority of those registered will exercise their democratic right by going out and voting. We call on those who have expressed an intention not to vote, not to disenfranchise themselves by staying away. For us the right to vote is a coveted prize that was earned under difficult and painful circumstances. Let us all in embracing responsible citizenry, rise to the occasion of deepening our democracy and ensuring that we exercise responsibility, restraint and tolerance. We are convinced the ANC will be returned to the helm of government with overwhelming majority as a result of our hard work throughout the country. We remain committed in advancing democracy, improving the quality of life of our people and in ensuring that people are at the centre of our governance. The ANC acknowledges the role of our alliance partners in ensuring a formidable campaign that took us to all corners of our country. South Africans received the ANC warmly throughout our interactions. We are confident that these elections will be successful, peaceful, free and fair. The ANC has deployed 75 000 party agents who will monitor, support and observe the elections. ANC branches will join volunteers as door knockers to remind people to go out and vote tomorrow. We want to remind people to go and vote where they are registered. ANC lives, ANC leads!
