ANC Statement, 29 May 2014 Government Intervention in the Mining Strike The African National Congress (ANC) applauds and welcomes the renewed initiative by the government through the newly appointed Minister of Mineral Resources, Comrade Ngoako Ramathlodi and his team to try and find a lasting solution to the mining strike in the platinum belt. We hope this initiative will assist in resolving the strike that has been running for four months and starting to impact on the economy, the workers, their families and the communities around these mines. It is the view of the ANC that the continued strike may have negative impact to the extent that the economy may not be able to absorb its consequences. As all parties engage we are urging them to do so in good faith and to show that they put the country first, so that jobs are not jeopardised. We take this opportunity to wish the latest initiative success. We call on all stakeholders to work hard around the clock to find an amicable solution.
