Development is Class Struggle Development is not a mental contest between "neo-liberalism" and some other "ism". Development is not a project for the wording of new, more perfect Congress resolutions, or for the defence of old ones. Development happens in actual, daily class struggle. It happens with or without NUMSA, COSATU or the SACP, for some examples. It happens with or without the Freedom Charter, for that matter. It happens if you please, or if you don't please. Development is not something added on to life, but it is life itself. Development happens under capitalism, too. Human development did not stop when capitalism came along. In fact, it accelerated, as never before, and not just materially, but in general, culturally. "Combat or Death: bloody struggle or extinction. It is thus that the question is inexorably put." That is from the novel "Jean Siska", by George Sand, quoted by Karl Marx at the end of his first published work, "The Poverty of Philosophy". So long as development is unconscious, there will always be a danger of "the common ruin of the contending classes" (Communist Manifesto). Our job as the vanguard is to light the way so that we can all see better where we are going; So that we can together become free-willing agents, able to plan collectively, and realise our collective plans. The revolutionary intellectual and martyr Walter Rodney helped us in this regard. So did Colin Leys. So did David Moore. -- -- You are subscribed. This footer can help you.
