Ex-EFF member fears for his life Lubabalo Ngcukana, City Press, Johannesburg, 6 July 2014 A former member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says the party’s creditors are after him, and now he fears for his life. Themba Ntlana, the EFF’s former Eastern Cape convener, said when they attended the party’s national assembly in Gauteng last year, he was tasked with organising a bus and minibus taxi to transport the provincial delegation. “I was told by the party that the money would be paid on the same day we were travelling to Gauteng. But we went to Gauteng and came back without these people being paid. Now they want their money from me,” he said. “They come to my house demanding payment. I have referred them to the EFF since I am no longer a member of the organisation, but they come back to me saying they are not getting any joy from the provincial leadership. I now fear for my life.” Ntlana said the EFF owes R68 000 for the bus and R10 000 for the minibus taxi. He rejoined the ANC early this year, claiming the EFF advocated “ill-discipline”. He also said he was considering legal action against the EFF to force them to pay up. But Eastern Cape EFF leader Themba Wele vehemently denied Ntlana’s claims. “That man is telling you lies,” he said. “In fact, we gave him the money to pay, but he ate it. That is why we chased him away from the EFF. He must tell those people who we hired the vehicles from the truth. “He is the one who owes them. He is a businessman and does not want to see money in front of him. He just takes and takes.” Meanwhile, it was reported this week that the EFF had been kicked out of its East London offices for not paying their rent. The landlord, known only as Hamza, told City Press the party owed him R17 000, or five months’ rent. But after the reports appeared, the party promised to pay him by Monday at the latest. Wele said the provincial leaders who previously occupied the office in question had since moved to King William’s Town to be closer to the Bhisho provincial legislature. The office in East London would now be used by their regional structure, he said. On Thursday he said they did not owe rent for the offices but, when asked again on Friday, he said they would pay the money this weekend or by Monday latest. Wele said they had entered into a one-year lease agreement with the landlord and would pay for that whole period upfront. “We might be a small party but we do pay our bills,” he said. “It’s not true that we owe people money.
