NUM report back rally attracts thousands Mohanoe Khiba, The New Age (North West), Johannesburg, 7 July 2014 The National Mineworkers Union's (NUM) report back rally held at the sports complex in Vaal Reef's Shaft No 8 near Orkney on Saturday was a success, with thousands of mine workers from different provinces around the country attending. Security was beefed up following claims that the rally could be disrupted by rival unions. "We heard that there are people who wanted to disrupt our rally but we are glad that they failed to do so and thanks to our police for the safety of our members," NUM secretary Frans Baleni told the attending mine workers. In his report back to the mine workers he stated that NUM was busy building houses for mine workers in Royal Bafokeng, Rustenburg and Kuruman. "We also heard that Mr X's statement at the Marikana Commission about the cutting of a tongue and mouth of those who did not heed the order to strike was just an act of satanism. The widow of a mine worker was also stabbed 18 times and killed, according to information we are gathering." Baleni said the families or beneficiaries of the mine workers killed had been provided with study funds. "We have also made sure that the mine workers who got sick at work must be also be paid," Baleni said. NUM president Piet Mathosa said: "We are aware that our organisation is under attack so we must stand up and protect it by leading with respect. Some of us are dead and not by stones under the ground in the mines but by some other people. "We are appealing for unity and we do not want to see any members of our organisation fighting each other." Mathosa said in the coming weeks there would be a regional conference where they would meet with chairpersons before the national conference soon, where there would be clarity about some confusing issues regarding the union. "There are certain people who still have that mentality that they are our bosses and by stressing that, they are still using our people to do bad things," he added. Mathapelo Langman from Samanco said: "There are people who broke into our offices and killed our people in Rustenburg. At least they showed us a way, so we need to pick up some pieces and continue to focus." North West provincial SACP secretary Madoda Sambatha, who is also public works MEC, said: "The union is not an organisation where all of us must be leaders. Do not elect someone to be a leader because he or she is a Xhosa or a Sotho. And to those who come to your houses and ask for a bribe to elect them to be your leaders, please expose them during the day in the meetings."
