SADTU Statement, 9 August 2014 Happy Women's Day! SADTU Celebrates National Women's Day SADTU has joined millions of South Africans in observing and celebrating National Women's Day in Limpopo at Val Duncan FETC at Namagale, Phalaborwa, today. On 9 August in 1956, more than 20 000 women camped outside the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest the carrying of passes, designed to regulate the movements of African people. At the forefront were Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Sophia Williams, Fatima Moosa and many more brave women. As we celebrate this day every year to highlight challenges and outstanding achievements of women, we should not rest on our laurels as more needs to be done to fulfil women's emancipation. Women in less developed countries are going through difficult social and economic struggles, because of the perceptions that they are inferior. In our country today women have the freedom and rights that are enshrined in the Constitution but they are faced with many challenges: - Inequalities - Violence, rape and murder - Exclusion from decision making processes; - Girls discouraged from education; Women's role in activism and their beliefs should be recognized. While we have witnessed progress in women enjoying legal rights, occupying political platforms, business platforms and participating in social activities, we urge our government to continue with its efforts on women empowerment and gender equality. While the progress has been made, gender inequality is prevalent where women are still earning low salaries compared to their male counterparts. The empowerment of rural women also needs to be taken into consideration. We urge our people to support education efforts as the tool to liberate humanity from myths and ignorance. We can only have total emancipation when we all join hands and emulate the 1956 Women who made an immense contribution in our struggle. Education, as a public good, must be used to empower and develop our people to be activists against gender stereotypes and abuse against women. We call upon our members as nation builders and professionals to do more in educating the young about revolutionary patriotism in defence of human rights. As we service our members in fulfilling our 2030 Vision, we commit our Union to fight side by side with the women of our beautiful country to end women and children abuse.
