ANC Statement, 14 August 2014 Outcomes of By-Elections The African National Congress participated in by-elections in 15 wards throughout the country, yesterday 13 August 2014. Of these wards, four (4) wards had been ANC wards following the Local Government Elections of 2011 and the rest, eleven (11), were opposition wards. The African National Congress retained three (3) of its wards and won a further two (2) wards, one each from the DA and the IFP; proving once again the solid base of support the organisation enjoys amongst our people. The African National Congress is humbled by the confidence South Africans to continue to show in the ability of the ANC to move our country forward. They communicate loudly through the ballot box that the ANC is a representation of the aspirations of our people and no amount of political posturing by other political parties with intention to delegitimise the election process will convince them otherwise. The victory of our people and the ANC in ward 40 in Kuyga Park in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality, following a desperate attack on the IEC by the DA in an effort to retain the ward, is a clear example of this commitment. The people of Kuyga Park have rejected the DA, sending a message that the ANC is the political home of the masses of our people, enjoying the decisive and unwavering support of communities in the region. Thanks to IEC The ANC thanks all members of the various communities who came out in their numbers to vote in the by-elections. We further thank the men and women of the IEC who worked to make the by-elections the transparent, impartial and credible elections that South Africa has been accustomed to. As an organisation, we are committed to deliver on the mandate once more bestowed upon us.
