Premier hails Gauteng teachers

Matthews Riba, Gauteng Online, 18 August 2014

Principals from schools across Gauteng gathered at Birchwood hotel to meet
Gauteng Premier, David Makhura on Friday. Coming from both primary and
secondary schools, they flocked in numbers to meet Gauteng's number one
citizen.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Phanyaza Lesufi also attended the principals'
meeting, and addressed some of the management ills that the principals often
encounter in the running of schools.

Principals were also given an opportunity to voice challenges they often
face in schools.

Many principals complained of limited resources. Citing a lack of modern
resources like computers prevented them from delivering top quality
education.

Makhura's presence at the gathering assured principals that their grievances
would be swiftly dealt with, and warned those whose schools are out of order
to start pulling up their socks. "You must work on the basis that we are
coming to visit your school," Makhura said.

Makhura intends paying unannounced visits to schools that are not doing well
with the aim of addressing the problems which affect such schools, with
that, he will also visit those that are doing well, in order to determine
the difference, in the course of aiding the poor-performing ones.

This is based on one of the Pillars of Makhura's 10-pillar programme, he has
introduced during the inception of his administration. He aims to transform
the quality of education in Gauteng. "We need to set ourselves high
standards, and compete with the rest of the world, and make team education a
winning team," Makhura said.

Although some schools in Gauteng appear to be poorly-managed and plagued by
social problems, Makhura hailed the principals of Gauteng for their hard
work and critical role they are playing to shape the society, and changing
lives. "The value of education cannot be measured by anything," Makhura
said.

The Premier also added that the Gauteng education system can be improved
when principals take a strong stance against ill-discipline and remaining
firm in the running of their schools.

He further added that as principals play a major role in the running of the
schools, they need to assign those with the right attitude, the right
skills, and appropriate resources and work in environments which will bring
the best out them.
