COSATU special indaba not about NUMSA NUMSA's appeal will be heard at the national congress level, says federation Luyolo Mkentane, The New Age, Johannesburg, 8 December 2014 COSATU will not be holding a "special national congress" to hear NUMSA's appeal against its expulsion from the labour federation. Sdumo Dlamini, president of COSATU, said yesterday that NUMSA appealed their expulsion on Friday and requested that "there must be a special national congress (SNC) to hear their appeal." "It doesn't work like that in COSATU's constitution. "You appeal within 30 days and the constitution says the appeal will be heard in the next national congress," he said. Dlamini reportedly said he had read NUMSA's appeal and "I was hoping and expecting at least they would be able to say 'we are sorry,' but they are still saying the same thing. "They are standing firm, they are not prepared to change their position and I don't know what their appeal is trying to achieve if you are not showing any remorse for your actions and wrongdoings." The special national congress was requested by COSATU affiliates who supported NUMSA and wanted the congress to elect a new leadership in the labour federation. COSATU was also expected to hold its ordinary national congress in September. "This means if things were to go their (NUMSA) way we would have a total of three congresses next year," Dlamini said. "[The Special National Congress] will be held from July 13-16 next year, as requested by one-third of COSATU affiliates." Irvin Jim, general secretary of NUMSA, was aggressive at the weekend. "We have no time for Sdumo Dlamini," he said. "But we have got time to forge the unity of workers and we have got time for making sure that workers are organised and united under the banner of the federation, which is currently under siege and fragmented.
