COSATU President criticises Vavi Luyolo Mkentane, The New Age, Johannesburg, 9 December 2014 COSATU president Sdumo Dlamini [criticised] his general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, for distancing himself from a collective decision to expel NUMSA from the labour federation and criticised "spaza shop organisations" such as the recently [proposed] SA Public Service Union (Sapsu). Dlamini was addressing the NEHAWU central executive committee meeting which started with a video clip of late SA Communist Party leader Chris Hani saying he was not pleased when the ANC entered into negotiations with the apartheid regime which led to freedom but that as a disciplined cadre he had to respect the decision. Vavi had said last month he would not defend the decision to expel NUMSA from the labour federation as the decision had the potential to destroy COSATU. "A principled leader respects the collective view. A principled leader does not say I distance myself from that position which is a collective decision," Dlamini said. This, while a political process led by the ANC was under way to try to unify the divided federation. When asked to comment via a text message, Vavi said: "I forwarded to him (Dlamini) your message and the response was, 'he is mad'." Dlamini also criticised last week's [announcement] of the [proposed] SA Public Service Union led by Thobile Ntola who is the former president of teachers union SADTU. Ntola was fired from SADTU. "I ask myself why would a leader found guilty of corruption and expelled by his union believe that public servants would trust him with their lives. Why would workers place their trust in a leader who is corrupt?" Dlamini said.
