SACP EC Statement, 10 December 2014

"In the name of Nelson Mandela and that of ANC let's act now or never"

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Eastern Cape has noted with
great concerns the protracted "Nelson Mandela memorial scandal" that has
engulfed the local state, but excruciating in the Buffalo City Metropolitan
Municipality. We have thus noted the worrisome reported developments in the
scandal which include amongst others the convictions, the reported string of
death threats. We welcome the conviction of the businessman charged
alongside the political leadership of BCMM as it brings the matter closer to
conclusion.

This "Nelson Mandela Memorial Scandal" raised its ugly head following the
death of our revered leader, former President of the African National
Congress (ANC); first Commander-in-Chief of the people`s liberation army,
uMkhonto we Sizwe; founding President of our first democratically elected
government, Comrade Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. It is sad to note that whilst
the people of our country and the entire world mourned this world icon, some
saw an opportune to pocket R5.9 million of the money meant for the
memorials.

This scandal does not only compromise the standing of those implicated but
also put the good standing of our ANC in society into scrutiny. It also
tarnishes the good name and the image of our revered leader Nelson
Rolihlahla Mandela.

It is in this context that we reaffirm our call for those implicated to act
in the best interest of the ANC and follow the Mangaung resolution by
stepping aside and allow the organization to consider their individual
cases. We are calling for decisiveness from the leadership of the ANC in
relation to the matter, the ANC must take action and not wait for implicated
people to decide if they want to step aside or not; it is the role of the
leadership to provide the leadership and protect the name and the image of
the ANC.

In the name and the image of Nelson Mandela and that of the ANC alliance we
are calling for decisive action.
