Front put on hold Kingdom Mabuza, The Times, Johannesburg, 15 December, 2014 The launch of NUMSA's United Front and its first national assembly were characterised this weekend as a meeting of "angry" leftists that failed to live up to expectations. The assembly, in Gauteng, had been billed as the occasion of the launch of the National Union of Metalworkers of SA's United Front but, instead of launching the front, union members nominated an interim committee that will run its affairs until next year. The aborted launch has enabled NUMSA's detractors to decry the assembly as "NUMSA's complete failure to carry out its long-time plan of creating a United Front". The general secretary of the SA Democratic Teachers' Union, Mugwena Maluleke, said NUMSA's United Front initiative was a "complete failure". "The cabal at the top of NUMSA thought that they could create a coalition of the angry by bringing together people who are jealous of the ANC's success, and who want to steal the ANC's clothes," he said.
