Fax (021) 465 7956 17 December 2014 Minister Nzimande is saddened about the passing away of one the leading historian Professor Jeff Guy. I wish to express my deep sadness at the news of the passing away of Prof. Jeff Guy, one of South Africa's most eminent historians. Prof Guy's work in Zulu historical studies has been path-breaking. It has included his first major work, The Destruction of the Zulu Kingdom, his study of Bishop Colenso, The Heretic, two major books on the Bambatha Rebellion of 1906: The Maphumalo Rebellion and Remembering the Rebellion, and his recently published study, Theophilus Shepstone and the Forging of Natal, among other works. Prof Guy worked hard to understand the history of the dispossession and oppression of the African people in the area now known as KwaZulu-Natal. He also cared deeply that the past should not be misused to justify the oppression of rural people, and especially women, in the present through the manipulation of tradition by traditional leaders. While in exile in Norway, Prof Guy sympathized with the SA liberation movement and was associated with the anti-apartheid movement. On returning to South Africa in the early 1990s, he joined the history department of the University of Natal (later part of the University of KwaZulu-Natal) where he remained until the end of his career, educating young historians and continuing his highly productive research activities, even long after he had retired. It is my fervent hope that younger and aspiring generations of historians will learn from the works of Jeff Guy, and in particular to research and write about the history of the heroic struggles of our people against colonialism and apartheid - a history that still awaits to be told in full. To his family, friends and colleagues, I extend my sincerest sympathies. Dr E.B.
