SADTU rallies behind ANC Russel Molefe, The New Age, Johannesburg, 13 January 2015 The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has again thrown its weight behind the ANC. The union said the ruling party had championed the interests of the poor and the most vulnerable in society. "As the teachers of this country, we are proud to be associated with a movement that was born out of the aspirations of our people," the union said. It vowed to continue to play its part through the tripartite alliance "to ensure that the ANC succeeds in delivering on its promise of a better life for all. We are aware that challenges inherent of a movement in power have emerged in recent years." Recently, the union weighed heavily into the saga involving its mother body COSATU and metalworkers affiliate NUMSA, whose expulsion from the federation SADTU supported when it became clear that the saga had become an ideological battle. NUMSA, among others, was believed to be behind the moves to lead COSATU to break ties with the ANC. NUMSA, led by its general secretary Irvin Jim, was drumming up support among like-minded organisations and individuals in its endeavour to launch the United Front, believed to be a precursor to a workers party. However, SADTU said the challenges faced by the tripartite alliance were not insurmountable and "that the ANC would live for another 103 years and more". "Our confidence in the ANC is not just sentimental but based on hard facts that cannot be disputed," the union said. "We have seen for instance, tangible progress in the quality of education that the African working class child received since 1994 when the ANC took over," the union said. This was after the ANC "invaded" the DA stronghold of the Western Cape and vigorously campaigned ahead of its 103-year-old celebratory rally at the Cape Town stadium on Saturday. The party, which is the oldest liberation movement, started its celebrations in the Western Cape with a cake-cutting ceremony in Khayelitsha. This was preceded by weeks of heavy campaigning by its top brass including President Jacob Zuma, his deputy Cyril Ramaphosa and secretary-general Gwede Mantashe. "As we mark the 60th anniversary of the Freedom Charter, we are reminded that the ANC was the only organisation involved in its drafting during the Congress of the People in Kliptown in 1955 that exists and inspires all our people to this day," the union said.
