SADTU Limpopo Province Media Statement, 22 January 2015 The Limpopo Department of Education fails to pay markers timeously SADTU in the Limpopo Province notes with disgust the failure of the Department of Education to pay markers timeously. It seems this is a new trend that markers in Limpopo are paid two to three months after marking. This is contrary to the past when markers were paid immediately after completing their work. Adding salt to the wound, markers in other provinces were paid long ago. The Union would like to warn the Department that the consequences of not paying before the end of January 2015 would be dire for the department and the system in general. We would like to remind the Department that the Union indicated that it would not accept late payments. The least it could do would be to demand payments with interest and if this is not adhered to, the system would be seriously shaken. Reasons advanced by the Department are not convincing. They lack leadership and commitment. It is unreasonable and inhumane that the Department should begin to show interest to pay after issues are raised in the media. It is our conviction that the department is gradually collapsing due to some officials who simply throw it from one crisis to another. The Union demands that all problems raised including - amongst others - payment of markers, payment of AET salary cuts, appointment of foreign and temporary educators, etc be resolved before end of January 2015. If not, the Union will embark on roll-out Mass Action programme.
