SADTU Media Statement, 19 February 2015

Response to article by suspended member Aaron Mhlontlo

The article on the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) which
appeared in the Daily Dispatch on Wednesday 18 February 2015 attributed to
one Aaron Mhlontlo is false.

Firstly, we would like to set the record straight that Mhlontlo does not
speak for SADTU in the Eastern Cape. He was suspended from the Union during
the meeting of the National Executive Committee in May 2014. He has no
authority or even a legal standing to represent SADTU.

The 8th national congress held in October, 2015 mandated the National
Executive Committee (NEC) to expedite the investigation on the Eastern Cape
Provincial Congress and implement remedial action based on the
investigation. The report of the investigation was presented at a Special
NEC held on the 9th of February, 2015. The SNEC was convened to discuss two
main points - to receive the report of the task team that was established to
look into the Eastern Cape Provincial Conference and a congress resolution
on members and structures taking the union to court.

The SNEC took a decision to nullify the 2014 Eastern Cape Provincial
Conference with immediate effect. This means there is no Provincial Working
Committee (PWC) leadership. A task team has since been established. The
decision to nullify the Conference was informed by a number of factors
including the credentials of the very Provincial Conference. The credentials
were determined by a meeting of the PEC that was not properly constituted in
that it was attended by the very same Mhlontlo who had been suspended in May
2014. The PEC was held in June 2014.

A task team comprising two members from each of the six regions was
established to look into the affairs of the Province working together with
the NEC. Mhlontlo is not part of the task team as he remains suspended from
the organization.

No one can claim to speak on behalf of SADTU Eastern Cape except members of
the Task Team if so mandated. No structure should take instructions from
elements who have either been disbanded or suspended from the organization.

No structure met to sanction the purported programme to disrupt education in
the province. The only structure that is authorized to engage with the MEC
and SG for Education in the Eastern Cape is the Provincial Task Team.

Mhlontlo is in contempt of court because he was disqualified from contesting
the elections after he lost the court case.
