NEHAWU Statement, 7 March, 2015

International Woman's Day

"The revolution and women's liberation go together. We do not talk of
women's emancipation as an act of charity or out of a surge of human
compassion. It is a basic necessity for the revolution to triumph."

Thomas Sankara, African revolutionary

NEHAWU wishes the women of the world a wonderful International Women's Day
on the 8th of March 2015, under this year's theme, Make it Happen. The
International Women's Day has been taking place for the last 104 years to
celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women around
the world.

On this day we salute the heroines, who are millions of woman taking care of
their families, raising the next generation and also earning a living under
difficult conditions and patriarchal societies. The attitudes towards women
have changed over the years and so many strides have been made to emancipate
women from the shackles of oppression. We cannot though afford to be
complacent in the struggle for social and economic emancipation of women.

It has been proven all around the world that the empowerment of women has
been a cure for poverty and has transformed societies. Societies that have
given women some power to decide for themselves whether they have kids /
families or not, have changed for the better. Unfortunately some religious
and cultural doctrines have continued to imprison women to a cycle of
poverty by insisting on some antiquated dogmas.

The Neoliberal policies that have been broadly adopted across the world have
reinforced the class and gender oppression, through their persistent
offensive against social security and reproductive rights, workers' wages
and conditions of work; including casualisation, labour broking, etc.

Women across the world are still waging relentless battles against
patriarchal and sexist attitudes around the world and there are still
oppressive regimes that treat women like second class citizens. Woman are
being exploited and enslaved by ruthless capitalists and are also still
trafficked and sexually abused especially those from the poor and vulnerable
backgrounds. Very few countries and workplaces have embraced the principle
of "equal pay for equal work".

In a number of conflict zones and war torn countries millions of women are
victims of heinous crimes including murder. NEHAWU re-affirms its commitment
to fight for the full emancipation of women and challenges governments and
humankind to ensure that women are not victims of commercial and sexual
exploitation, forced marriages and domestic abuse.
