Vavi-Jim Imbizo cancelled following court order in favour of SAMWU Theto Mahlakoana, IOL, Johannesburg, 11 April 2015 A worker's imbizo which was scheduled to be addressed by former COSATU general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi and Metalworkers Union (NUMSA) general secretary, Irvin Jim, on Saturday morning has been cancelled. The event was organised by a group of former Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU) members who operate under the name: Save our SAMWU (SOS). The cancellation comes after an eleventh hour court interdict obtained by SAMWU to force SOS to stop using the union's brand and logo. SAMWU was also granted a restraining order that states the group is also prohibited from undermining the national executive of SAMWU and distributing misinformation about the union and its activities. Although the ruling only has bearing on the event which was scheduled to take place on Saturday morning, SOS has admitted it would set them back. "That is unfortunate. We see it as a suppression by SAMWU not to allow members to debate the issue about the status of the union," said the group's Mohau Mokgatla. He said they resolved to go back to their members to ask if they need a new name to rally behind. SOS also has the difficult task of explaining to members who were ready to gather at the Unisa examination centre in Ormonde, outside Johannesburg, that the event won't take place any longer. "We have spoken to our various coordinators and they are handling the situation there. They are addressing members at various pick-up points on why the event has been moved," he explained. Mokgatla said a number of their fellow disgruntled former SAMWU members had expressed to their committee that they wanted an end to their fight to get back into SAMWU. The members, he said, proposed that they establish a new formation instead. SAMWU spokesman, Papikie Mohale said it was indeed a better option for members of SOS to move on as their continued use of their brand caused confusion. "We value our brand and believe that it should not be used for purposes of destabilising the union as these disgruntled former leaders continue to. In line with our CEC resolutions, we will continue to defend and protect the integrity of the union, that of its leaders and members," he said. Mohale also accused the group of misrepresenting itself as SAMWU representatives.
