SATAWU is worried about the attacks on its leaders

Many of our leaders in South African Transport and Allied Workers Union
(SATAWU) including President June Dube, General Secretary, Zenzo Mahlangu
and slain Gauteng General Secretary Chris Nkosi have received death threats
on their lives. This has left the organisation reeling and other leaders
fearing for their lives.

SATAWU has been in communication with the police on the threats to the lives
of our leadership. We urge the police to investigate the incidents of
violence on SATAWU leaders as a matter of urgency.

The incidents we speak of are namely;

. President June Dube's home in Vosloorus was petrol bombed in the early
hours of Tuesday morning.

. Monday night Cde Chris Nkosi was assassinated on his way home. His car
was shot five times

. Chairperson in the Western Cape was held at gun point in his house and
his car and belonging were taken. We do not believe that this was a random
act of criminality. We need police to investigate it as a threat and attempt
to assassinate our own.

. The Western Cape Provincial Secretary's house was also petrol-bombed
too.

. Several other leaders from other provinces have been threatened. That
is why the union had invested in bodyguards.

These acts are not random nor are they isolated. They are a clear display of
hatred and disregard of human life. They are not acts of uniting a union for
the people but are acts of division and malice.

We have increased the security on our leaders but urge those engaged in any
of this violent activity to stop.

SATAWU condemns the killing of its staff member and the threat of violence.
Our mandate is one of fighting for workers above all things. Ours isn't a
mission to bury one another.

SATAWU calls on all members to close ranks for unity and be vigilant against
dividing forces. We call on all members at this delicate time, to exercise
maximum restraint and to act in accordance with obligations of the law.
