NUM to challenge Anglo job cuts

Zunaid Ismael, iAfrica, Johannesburg, 29 April 2015

The National Union of Mineworkers says that it will challenge Anglo
Platinum's decision to retrench workers, the union's general secretary Frans
Baleni said.

The retrenchments are part of the mining company's 2013 consolidation plan
at its Rustenberg mine, in which it is seeking to create a more sustainable
platinum mining industry.

The mining company says that the company had consulted with unions over the
restructuring, and where retrenchments were necessary, had sought to find
other employment within the company for the affected workers.

According to an ANA report, about 470 workers will be retrenched.
