Row over paper's 'agenda' TNA Reporters, The New Age, Johannesburg, 15 May 2015 The Eastern Cape Premier, Phumullo Masualle, has reacted with shock to the contents of an alleged internal memo of the Daily Dispatch that intends to cover him, other ANC leaders in the province and provincial government departments negatively. In a three-page memorandum purportedly to Daily Dispatch staff in preparation for a workshop, and seen by The New Age, it outlines plans for the 2015-16 period to keep a sharp eye on any developments surrounding the premier's personal life, his clothes and whether it was bought for him and the appointments he makes. The memo states: "The accident he had with his vehicle, appointment in the province, who he is involved with, who is he influencing and are there scandals around him. What is he wearing, who bought him what, what presents." The memo also cited the behaviour of former premier Nosimo Balindlela who used to meet her cabinet at particularly early morning meetings. The memo suggests staff find out how Masualle operates and to get a one-on-one interview with him to find out more about his plans. The document also refers to his possible "involvement in the Mandela scandal" and goes on to ask where this is "going to take him to, is he going to be arrested, if not, how's he going to fight corruption and is he fit for the position". The memo also puts forward the idea of joining forces with the opposition. Under a subhead Opposition the document asks: "Is there something they are coming up with? Can we work with them?" The premier has reportedly seen the document. Masualle's spokesperson, Nomfanelo Kota, said the premier was still shocked and disgusted. "The premier will consult with everyone including his legal team. We call upon media houses to uphold media law, values and ethics which seek to serve the interest of the public. However, we will continue to work with the media but we reject the abuse of media power," she said. Kota said they have witnessed political infiltration in newsrooms which should be condemned.
