ANC Calls for a Speedy Resolution of the Teachers' Strike in Ilembe and Ugu
Districts

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal calls for cool heads
and the prioritisation of learners' right to education by the South African
Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) and the Department of Education as they
are trying to deal with the standoff that has seen schools closed for two
weeks in Ilembe and Ugu Districts.

The strike is a major cause for concern as it affects the education of
learners who have been out of school since it started two weeks ago.

The ANC takes the education of children very serious and gets concerned when
learners are out of school as a result of issues that can be address and be
resolved. We call on all the parties who are part of the issues preventing
learners from learning to find a solution to the problem immediately.

The ANC cannot sit back and relax when the future of learners is being
jeopardised. That is the reason why a call is made on all the parties
involved to resolve the problem as soon as possible so that learners will go
back to school and prepare themselves for the life ahead.

We understand that there are issues that have led to the current situation
but those issues are not bigger than the future of learners who are facing
the risk of not getting good results at the end of the year. We note with
sadness that two weeks after the strike started, there is still no
indication of when are learners going back to school.

We know that there have been engagements between the provincial Department
of Education and SADTU but sad to note that those engagements have not yet
produced any results.
