SADTU empowers educators

Thumele Mmako, Letters, The Citizen, 21 May 2015

The two-paragraphed letter, published in your Letters Page on Tuesday, 19
May 2015 by Colson titled "SADTU has brought teaching to new low" is
baseless. He criticises SADTU for being in politics without giving any
facts whatsoever.

SADTU was created by the political system of this country. The union was
formed in 1990, in part as a response to the systematic challenges in the
professionalization, unionisation and development of teachers as well the
transformation of education system that was brought forth by the apartheid
government.

Its role is clear; it is there to fight for better remuneration and working
conditions for educational workers: representing and promoting the
professional aspirations of educators.

The union conducts teacher training and principal seminars throughout the
country to empower educators. These programmes are among many other aimed at
empowering educators. Colson should do himself a favour by familiarising
himself with the history of South Africa and SADTU's programmes so that he
can make rational comments.

The union continues to lead education transformation initiatives through
constant development of its members. The education of an African child will
at all times be in the union's heart .SADTU will continue to be a union of
revolutionary professionals, agents of change and champions of peoples'
education for peoples' power education in pursuit of socialism.

If Colson cannot stand the union, that is highly unfortunate because SADTU
has 256 000 members making it the biggest teacher union in South Africa.
