Nzimande blasts SABC and Multichoice's 'dirty' deal

Ngwako Modjadji, The Citizen, Johannesburg, 7 July 2015

The SA Communist Party (SACP) general secretary Blade Nzimande has described
the deal between the SABC and MultiChoice as "dirty", and vowed that the
party will take the matter to court.

Nzimande said the SABC was a "sham" that is being captured by cooperate
vultures like Multichoice. In terms of the deal, MultiChoice will have
rights to a number of popular shows like Generations. Nzimande said he now
understands why his wife, Phumelele Ntombela-Nzimande, was axed from the
public broadcaster.

"My wife would not have approved this deal," Nzimande told journalists
during an on-the-record briefing in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, on Monday
night. "It is dirty and scandalous. "We will not rest until the deal is
undone."

Nzimande, who is also the Higher Education Minister, accused the country's
media giant Naspers of having undue "influence"and "pressure" in some
sections of government. He suggested that the media should be subjected to
independent checks and balances.

Turning on the ANC-led tripartite alliance, Nzimande admitted that the
alliance was facing challenges. "The challenge is that we don't implement
programmes we had agreed upon," Nzimande said.

"We only implement the election programme." He lambasted the National Union
of Metalworkers of SA, accusing it of using workers' investment money to
fund the union's United Front.

"There is fraudulent use of money by the union in a manner that is not
principled," Nzimande said. Nzimande claimed that the party's membership has
grown since its leaders joined President Jacob Zuma's administration.

SACP second deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila said the party was taking
full responsibility for giving the country leaders like EFF leader Julius
Malema and his deputy Floyd Shivambu. The SACP special national congress
will start today at University of Johannesburg Soweto campus.

Mapaila said not all valid branches will attend the congress. "We have put a
limit of about 700 delegates," Mapaila said. "We hope this matter will not
create unnecessary divisions."

The SACP also poured cold water on claims that it intends to contest next
year's local government elections alone.
