New Age2 SACP to see laws are complied with Companies 'don't make workers permanent after three months' Peter Ramothwala, The New Age, Johannesburg, 21 July 2015 The South African Communist Party (SACP) has vowed to launch a relentless war against labour brokering and big private companies. The party has accused private companies of failing to comply with the new legislation which states that workers should be permanent after being at their posts for three months. During the response to debate on the State of the Nation Address earlier this year, President Jacob Zuma announced that in terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and the Labour Relations Acts as amended, all workers will be employed permanently. "Temporary work contracts will not exceed three months," the president said. SACP deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila yesterday said big capital continues to disregard the legislation. "Workers have full rights to be permanent. We are prepared to make sure there is full compliance. We will approach Treasury to make sure it allocates budget and resources for government inspectors to investigate companies that are not complying. We have seen a gross abuse of workers by labour brokers despite the recent introduction of regulations," he said. The party was unpacking declarations and resolutions of its special national congress held recently in Soweto. The congress resolved that the entire structure of the colonial features of the economy must be rolled back. "In particular, the congress not only emphasised the need to expand and diversify manufacturing in order to create jobs, but transformation in ownership and control to develop new social relations of production, and reduce inequality and poverty," Mapaila said. The SACP said it will take its Financial Sector Campaign to greater heights as part of the core imperatives to ensure the second radical phase of SA's transition. The party's head of policy, Malesela Maleka, said the resolutions are more detailed and cover a wide range of areas, including the need for the transformation and diversity of the media, transformation of the judiciary, reconfigured alliance and electoral options, forthcoming local government elections, fighting crime and corruption, accessible, affordable, reliable and integrated public transport system, BRICS and alternative global partnerships. "Resolutions on SACP organisational review and related alliance resolutions will be released separately following applicable internal and alliance processes," Maleka said.
