SADTU Statement, 21 July 2015 SADTU is taking part in the EI World Congress Twenty four members of the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) are among 2000 delegates from 400 teacher unions and associations across 171 countries that are taking part in the 7th World congress of Education International (EI) from July 21 -26, 2015 in Ottawa, Canada. EI is a global teacher and education workers' union federation with 31 million members across the world. The Congress which is the supreme governing authority of EI is held every four years to determine the policies, programmes of the organisation, elect new officers and other members of the executive board. The Congress is held under the theme, "Unite for Quality Education - Better Education for a Better World" - a name for the EI campaign to mobilise support for quality public education and to confront the increasing privatisation and commercialisation in and of education. SADTU General Secretary Mugwena Maluleke said they hoped the Congress would strengthen unity in education globally. "We will deliberate among others, the role of governments in the provision of education in areas that are affected by wars, the campaigns against increasing privatisation and commercialisation of education, campaigns on rights of education employees, teachers and learners in line with post 2015 Millennium Development Goals," Mugwena said.
