News24newest.jpg ANC leaders too old, says Lamola Genevieve Quintal, News24, Pretoria, 28 July 2015 The ANC needs younger leaders to keep up with a local and global society which is becoming younger, former ANC Youth League deputy president Ronald Lamola said. "That is what the youth league must demand. There must be a flood of young people into structures of the ANC," he told News24. "We need more young people, graduates of the youth league... who have experience on vital issues, to play a bigger role in the life of the ANC, to re-energise it and redirect it both in the national executive committee and in provincial structures, but also in Parliament." Lamola is expected to stand for ANCYL leader at its national elective congress to take place in September. He was acting ANCYL president after Julius Malema was expelled and was heading up the league when it was dissolved in 2013. Lamola said the youth had to fight for its position in the leadership structures of the mother body, this included the top six positions. 'Retirement village' The National Assembly could not become a retirement village for older politicians. "We must get young, energetic guys... who are going to bring energy and direction and new thinking... The old must accept that the young need space and the young must also understand that the old will not voluntarily give them space, they must fight for their space," Lamola said. "It can't be a retirement village." The country's two main opposition parties - the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters - are being led by young, black men such as Mmusi Maimane and Julius Malema. This is while the main leadership positions in the ANC are still held by veterans with a long history in the party. Lamola believes that at least 40% to 50% of decision making structures should constitute young people. However, the older more experienced leaders are still needed to impart wisdom on the younger ones. "The reality is we can't wish all of them away. We need the experience of the older guys to guide us but also the older guys must be willing to give experience to a new and upcoming generation. "The old and young must co-exist," he said.
