New Age2.png 'Faction behind purges' Peter Ramothwala, The New Age, Johannesburg, 31 July 2015 Tensions could escalate between the African National Congress and its alliance partner, the South African Communist Party (SACP), in Mpumalanga over allegations of corruption, and purging at the centre of the expulsion of four mayors. The SACP in Mpumalanga said it was convinced the sudden reshuffle effected by the ANC leadership in the province which saw four mayors being axed was not based on performance and service delivery, as the ANC said. The SACP said it was not consulted, as the alliance partner, on the expulsion of the four. The ANC axed Salome Sithole (Emalehleni mayor), Caroline Morajane (Lekwa in Standerton), Tiny Mthimunye (Dr JS Moroka) and Selina Mathabe (Thaba Chweu) to allow new and fresh leadership. SACP provincial secretary Bonakele Majuba said the intention was to purge those who did not support the ruling faction of the ruling party in the province which is on a quest to retain power. "There will be no local government election campaigns if these two parties don't reconcile and do away with gross corruption that hinders service delivery to the people. "We have been vocal over corruption and the killings of honest comrades. "The reshuffle comes at a time that the alliance is supposed to be focused on the election campaign. "This is more political than administrative. We view this as a continued strategy to milk our municipalities by lumpen-tenderpreneurs," he said. Asked about the state of the alliance in the province, ANC spokesperson Sbusiso Themba refused to comment and referred all the inquiries to ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe.
