Makhura is upbeat about ANC support

The ANC has clawed back support from its poor election results last year,
Gauteng Premier David Makhura says.

"Based on the work we've done over the past 14 months, independent surveys,
not done by the Gauteng government, show that in November last year the ANC
was recovering its support to 55 percent in Gauteng," Makhura told the
provincial COSATU congress.

"By March this year, we recovered to 60 percent. We're confident the ANC
will go back to the support it used to enjoy - way above 60 percent in this
province."

Makhura was addressing delegates on the second day of COSATU's Gauteng
congress.

He urged union members to accept that corruption in the government was not
merely "a rumour".

"It is endemic in the government. My people experience corruption in their
daily life with the government," he said.

He called on workers to join the, provincial government in creating
employment, mainly through re-industrialisation programmes.

As announced during his. State of the Province Address earlier this year,
five development corridors will be created, with Ekurhuleni to be made the
manufacturing hub.

Makhura claimed the government had saved more than 150 000 jobs in motor
manufacturing in Gauteng. "You can prevent job losses with state
intervention."

While "30 years ago no cars were produced in Gauteng" because they were all
manufactured in Durban or East London, 32 percent of cars are now being
produced in Rosslyn,

Pretoria.

"Learning from the government intervening in the automotive industry we want
to improve food and services, clothing, textile and timber industry job
growth," he said.

With mining declining, it was unfeasible for a place like the West Rand to
rely only on that sector.

He called on union investment arms to invest in the township economy and not
in white monopoly capital, and to look at how investing in townships could
create employment.
