South Africa:

Miners' Leaders Denounce Jobs Atrocity

The Morning Star, London, 7 August 2015

South African miners condemned the "carnage" of job losses yesterday after
Anglo-Swiss mining giant Glencore announced 1,000 redundancies.

Following a meeting of its national office holders in Johannesburg, the
National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) accused the mining industry of
unleashing a "jobs atrocity" against the working class.

"The offensive is not only directed at the mineworkers but against the
working-class families who rely on these breadwinners," the union said in a
statement.

"It is an attack that is intended to entrench the legacy of apartheid
deprivation and colonialism which subjected African people to a permanent
state of poverty."

The union welcomed the government's intervention after it convened an urgent
meeting on the crisis in the industry, which producers say is caused by a
global slump in mineral prices.

On Tuesday, the government suspended operations at Glencore's Optimum
coalmine in Mpumalanga province.

The NUM will hold wage negotiations today with goldmining bosses'
association the Chamber of Mines.
