South Africa:

Nkomati Nickel Mine Strikers Win Concessions from Bosses

The Morning Star, London, 20 August 2015

Striking South African miners have won pay and benefits concessions at the
Nkomati Nickel Mine in north-eastern Mpumalanga province.

National Union of Mineworkers deputy president Joseph Montisetse was
consulting members yesterday who have been on strike since Sunday over the
firm's latest offer.

He told the Morning Star that management had upped their three-year pay
offer to 8.5 per cent in the first year, 9 per cent in the second year and
10 per cent in the third.

The company was also offering significant improvements to medical aid and
long-service awards.

The CPI rate of inflation in South Africa is currently running at around 4.5
per cent.

The mine, owned by billionaire Patrice Motsepe of African Rainbow Minerals,
contains one of the largest nickel deposits in South Africa and is also a
major producer of platinum group metals including palladium, rhodium and
gold.
