The Congress of South African Trade Unions in Mpumalanga held its first Provincial Executive Committee meeting at the Nkangala District Offices in the Steve Tshwete Municipality on the 03-04 September 2015. The PEC meeting is the first since the Provincial Congress which was held on the 27-28 June 2015 which elected new leadership and developed a programme to revive and re-build the COSATU engines and foster unity and cohesion inside federation. The PEC meeting was successfully attended by all COSATU affiliate unions in the Province and representatives from the COSATU local structures. The meeting was addressed by the COSATU Acting General Secretary Comrade Bheki Ntshalintshali and the 2nd Deputy Provincial Secretary of the SACP in Mpumalanga Comrade Mandla Tibane. ON THE JOBS BLOOD BATH IN THE PROVINCE. The PEC held extensive discussions on the challenges confronting the labour movement both provincially , nationally and internationally , with looming retrenchments in the mining and the steel sector which are threatening to render thousands and thousands of workers unemployed .The meeting noted with regret that the economic crisis in both the steel and mining sector is not a product of the working class and the poor but is an intensification of the neo-liberal offensive by monopoly capital . This offensive is aimed at reversing the gains of the democratic governments and the working class across the globe. It manifest itself in the form of the restructuring of the workplace , capital flight , the proliferation of labour brokers , mass retrenchments and the introduction of precarious types of jobs nearly in each and every sector of our economy in order to maximise profit The meeting vowed to resist any attempts by monopoly capital to undermine the gains of our revolution and transfer their capitalist crisis into the working class and the poor. The working class is determined to wage a relentless struggle to defend its hard won gains. The PEC welcomes and appreciates the intervention by both the Provincial and national government in trying to avoid and reduce the impact of the envisaged mass retrenchments. COSATU believes that there is a desperate need for a long-lasting solution to this crisis, but this can only be possible to achieve if the problem is correctly diagnosed. It is against this background that COSATU calls on the mining and steel companies to put a moratorium on the retrenchments in order to allow a conducive climate for engagements in trying to arrive at a long lasting solution to this crisis. ON THE CALL FOR THE PROVINCIAL ALLIANCE SUMMIT COSATU in the province reaffirms its commitments to be an active participant towards building a strong and revolutionary alliance in the province. COSATU believes that a strong and united alliance is a prerequisite for the success of the National Democratic Revolution and the radicalisation of the second phase of our democratic transition. COSATU calls on all its leaders and members in the Province to be active contributors in the creation of a united, non racial, non sexist and democratic society. In this regard, COSATU in the Province will approach the ANC which is the leader of the alliance and request it to convene an urgent Provincial Alliance summit before the end of October 2015 whose objectives will be to confront both the political and economic challenges engulfing the Province. ON THE WORLD DAY FOR DECENT WORK The 7th October is the World Day for Decent Work. COSATU in Mpumalanga will celebrate this day by staging the mother of all battles protest marches in the province to protest against the high levels of unemployment, retrenchments, closure of mines and any type of precarious employment. The PEC has decided to lead protest marches across the province and deliver memorandums to both the Department of labour in the Emalahleni Municipality, to the employers and the Provincial Government. ON THE GLOBAL WEEK OF ACTION FOR DEMOCRACY IN SWAZILAND On the 09 September 2015, COSATU in Mpumalanga will join thousands of people all over the world in solidarity with the oppressed people of Swaziland as part of observing the global week of action for democracy in Swaziland. COSATU in Mpumalanga has mobilised thousands of its members, the alliance partners and all progressive organisations to pledge active international solidarity with the working class people of Swaziland. Since its inception , COSATU has spearheaded the campaign to call on the Swaziland oppressive , autocratic regime to create conducive conditions for a genuine and all inclusive political dialogue to end the more than 40 years of the Tinkundla autocratic rule. We fully support the call by the working class people of Swaziland that a precondition for a genuine dialogue to a democratic Swaziland is that the Tinkundla regime should concede to the following . The immediate unbanning of all political parties in Swaziland . . The immediate and unconditional release of political prisoners . The creation of a conducive environment for the unconditional return of all those who have been forced into exile . The abolishing of the Tinkundla system of governance and replace it with a multi-party transitional government to prepare for the election of the government of the people by the people. The media is invited to cover the protest actions on the 09 September 2015 at both the Matsamo and Oshoek border gates.
