Eskom delivery outshines all

Editorial, The New Age, Johannesburg, 9 September 2015

It is an unfortunate aspect of South African politics that successes in
government entities are never welcomed on merit but pooh-poohed to score
political points.

Sensational headlines screamed out this week that bonuses were being paid to
executives at Eskom based on a misreading by a DA MP of the utility's annual
report.

The report mentioned long-term incentives that had been awarded in the
2011-12 financial year, had vested in the 2013-14 financial year and which
were payable in June 2014. The amounts were reflected in Eskom's 2014-15
financials.

Minister of Public Enterprises Lynne Brown confirmed that Eskom executives
had not qualified for short-term bonuses in the past two financial years.

While the jury is still out, Eskom's turnaround seems to be gaining
traction. The country has not experienced load shedding for a month now even
while the utility's maintenance programme is under way.

For this, seconded Transnet CEO Brian Molefe and his team must be
congratulated. While the government has given itself a buffer of 18 months
to fix the utility, our information is that by early next year load shedding
will be a thing of the past. The current prognosis confirms it.

Eskom is chalking up other successes. They include the completion of the
Sere wind farm on the Cape west coast ahead of schedule and contributing
100MW of clean power to the grid, unit six of Medupi coming on stream, the
extension of transmission lines across the country and connecting an
additional 160000 households to the grid over the past year.

The bogus bonus claims seem intended to tarnish the outstanding work being
done by Molefe and his team. The claims must be dismissed with contempt and
not be allowed to affect Eskom's turnaround.
