SADTU Accuses Motshekga of Promoting 'Rogue Learning'

The union has reiterated its members will not be taking part in this year's
ANAs exams

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has accused Minister
Angie Motshekga of undermining education and promoting rogue learning at
schools.

On Friday, the Department of Basic Education announced its decision to
proceed with the Annual National Assessment (ANAs) exams later this year
apparently without consulting with any unions.

SADTU says it's not satisfied with the standard of the exams.

The union has reiterated its members will not be taking part in this year's
ANAs exams.

SADTU's Nomusa Cembi says the exams are of poor quality.

"We're just writing for the sake of writing a test which is not benefiting
education, because at the end of the day, it promotes rogue learning."

Motshekga said in Pretoria on Friday that the decision to write the exams at
the end of the year is in line with an agreement reached with unions.

A meeting was held between the unions and the department on Sunday, however
it's unclear whether the dispute over the ANAs will be resolved any time
soon.

MOTSHEKGA UNHAPPY WITH SADTU

On Friday, Motshekga said SADTU had raised legitimate concerns around the
ANAs exams, but she was unhappy with the way in which the issues were
raised.

"The task team will look into the frequency and the administration of ANAs
and the utilisation of ANAs."

Motshekga said the manner in which the union expressed its unhappiness was
unacceptable.

"It's a matter of concern, so your manner of approach is a problem, don't
put us in an ambush a week before the ANAs."

She said the parties have agreed to further discuss their concerns.
