Palestine:

Israel Demolishing Homes Again

World Desk, The Morning Star, London, 7 October 2015

Israel demolished two Palestinian homes in east Jerusalem yesterday, the day
after troops killed a child.

The moves to terrorise Palestinian communities followed a late-night cabinet
meeting at which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to use a
"strong hand" against resistance to the occupation.

The homes demolished early yesterday belonged to the family of a man who
killed four worshippers and a police officer in a Jerusalem synagogue last
year and the family of another man who killed one person when he rammed a
bulldozer into traffic.

Troops also sealed off a room at the home of Motaz Hijazi, who tried to kill
a prominent Orthodox Jewish activist last year, before its potential
demolition.

"If Netanyahu thinks that this will create deterrence, then he is wrong.
This will not deter anybody," said Mr Hijazi's brother Odai.

On Monday, Israeli forces shot dead two teenagers, including a 13-year-old
boy, who were allegedly throwing stones at Israeli soldiers during clashes
in the West Bank.

Abed Al Rahman Obeidallah was shot through the heart as he was going home
from school.

The killings followed the adoption of new rules of engagement for Israeli
forces, authorising the use of live fire against stone-throwing youths.

Thousands of troops have been deployed to the West Bank following last
week's killing of an Israeli settler couple and Saturday's fatal stabbing of
an Israeli man in Jerusalem's Old City.

Hundreds of Palestinians have already been wounded in clashes this week.

Undercover Israeli forces later raided a Nablus hospital and abducted a
wounded Palestinian who is suspected of killing the Israeli couple.

Thousands of Israelis, including three ministers in Mr Netanyahu's own
government, demonstrated outside the prime minister's home on Monday night,
demanding further repression in the occupied territories.

Israel has tried to blame Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas for
the rising tensions, after he accused Israel of reneging on the Oslo peace
accords.

But Mr Abbas insisted yesterday that his people did not want "military and
security escalations" and that he was ready for talks with Israel.

But, "at the same time, we will protect ourselves," he added.
