Blade worried by anti-Red talk

Fatima Asmal, The Times, Johannesburg, 16 November, 2015

He was in high spirits as he arrived for the SA Communist Party's seventh
KwaZulu-Natal congress and even stopped to buy a nifty red feathered hat for
a hundred bucks.

But Blade Nzimande, the SACP's general secretary, made no secret of the fact
that there were "stresses and divisions" in his party's political alliance
with the ANC.

The Communist Party congress was being held on the Asherville campus of the
eThekwini Technical and Vocational Education and Training College.

Growing "anti-communist sentiment" was worrying, Nzimande told The Times.

"We see an anti-communist stand that rears its head now and again. We
understand that there will always be that in the ANC, but we are worried
because in some of the provinces this is beginning to grow in a way that is
quite dangerous."

A few days ago Sihle Zikalala was elected chairman of the ANC in
KwaZulu-Natal.

After being announced as the winner he refused to shake hands with SACP
chairman Senzeni Zokwana.

Themba Mthembu, the SACP secretary in the province, said that this had
"disturbed" him.

ANC members who held "powerful positions" in the province had "anti-SACP
sentiments", he said.

Nzimande said that the hostile members "don't own the ANC".

"We've always being saying that the ANC belongs to all of us.

"We have hope in the ANC. We have hope in the wisdom of ordinary members of
the ANC.

"I don't think our people like to see the alliance fighting, to see the
throwing of stones at each other."

Nzimande said that the race for positions at the ANC's 2017 national
elective congress had already begun.

"This is dividing our organisation, not just the ANC. It's causing strains
and stresses in the alliance.

"It's completely unhealthy."

Nzimande called on the ANC to act in a way that would unite itself and the
alliance.

"We all have a responsibility but there is a particular responsibility on
the leadership of the ANC to unite itself, to unite the alliance, and to
seek to unite the country.

"We feel that the ANC should make an added effort towards that. They are not
doing enough.

"As the SACP we feel very strongly that we need to find a way to manage
outgoing presidents.

"This has caused us problems, which led to Polokwane in the past, which
began to divide the movement.

"There are people who have told themselves that they are going to be key
members who are already factionalising us.

"It sours alliance relations. We can't afford that each time there's a
transition there are ructions in the organisation," Nzimande said.
