South Africa:

Police Union Marches Over Killed Cops

The Morning Star, Johannesburg, 21 November 2015

Thousands of South African police officers marched through the capital
Pretoria yesterday to protest at the killings of 70 of their comrades this
year.

The march by police union Popcru was to present three memorandums to the
Minister of Police, Acting National Commissioner of Police and the Minister
of Justice and Correctional Services.

Their demands include armoured patrol vehicles and the establishment of a
unit dedicated to police killings.

"Police are not being protected. They are vulnerable and have low morale,"
said Popcru spokesperson Richard Mamabolo.

"Seeing their colleagues die in front of them is having a negative effect. A
war has been waged against police and something needs to be done."

The union also voiced its support for four officers from Krugersdorp who
have been charged with the murder of an armed robber who shot at them eight
times.
