Morning Star.png Correa Defends Venezuela from Right's Smears James Tweedie, The Morning Star, London, 27 November 2015 Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa has slammed the "smear campaign" by his Argentinian counterpart against socialist ally Venezuela. Argentinian president-elect Mauricio Macri pledged to have Venezuela expelled from South American trade bloc Mercosur over the jailing of opposition leaders for orchestrating deadly anti-government protests. But Mr Correa said on Wednesday that Mr Macri's comments were "clearly an interference in the internal affairs of Venezuela." The Ecuadorian leader pointed out that President Nicolas Maduro's Unified Socialist Party (PSUV) had won elections freely and fairly since 1998. Popular Will party leader Leopoldo Lopez was sentenced to nearly 14 years in jail in September after being convicted of inciting the anti-government riots that killed more than 40 people last year. And in October, A New Era party founder and former Zulia state governor Manuel Rosales was arrested at Caracas airport when he returned from six years on the run from corruption charges. With Venezuela going to parliamentary elections on December 6, right-wing opponents of the PSUV - both inside and outside the country - are ramping up the rhetoric. Mr Lopez's wife Lilian Tintori claimed the PSUV was engaged in a campaign of "terror" after Democratic Action (AD) party local leader Luis Manuel Diaz was shot dead following a campaign rally in Altagracia de Orituco in Guarico state. AD National Assembly deputy Carlos Prosperi said he heard gunshots as the rally was breaking up. But there was no indication as to who had carried out the attack.
