Tensions on the Syria-Turkey border soared yesterday as Syrian government
troops advanced through the Turkmen mountains.

Syrian forces captured Mount Kishkar in the north of Latakia province after
killing a number of insurgents, a military source said.

Government troops reportedly retook nearby Hill 1112, overlooking the
strategically important town of Jisr al-Shughur on Saturday.

Meanwhile the Turkish army deployed more troops and tanks to Gaziantep
province, across the border from Latakia.

Turkish media reported that a convoy transporting armoured personnel
carriers and 20 tanks arrived to reinforce the 5th Armoured Division.

And Syrian Brigadier General Ali Mayhoub said that his troops had come under
mortar fire from the Mount Jebel Aqra area in Turkey on Friday night.

Turkey has also deployed a sophisticated Aselsan Koral electronic jamming
system to the border, possibly to counter the Russian S-400 surface-to-air
missile system deployed there.

On Friday a US military spokesman denied that the deployment had prompted a
sudden halt in coalition air strikes.

Tensions between Nato member Ankara, Damascus and Moscow have been running
high since Turkey shot down a Russian Su-24 tactical bomber over Latakia
last week.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said yesterday that the remains of
pilot Oleg Peshkov would be returned to Russia.

Colonel Peshkov was murdered by an ethnic Turkmen militia led by Turkish
citizen and fascist Grey Wolves militant Alparslan Celik.

Russia imposed more economic sanctions on Turkey on Saturday.
